As many of you know, I recently relocated from Sacramento to NYC. I'm quickly finding out how lacking my winter wardrobe is and am trying to fill in the gaps before it gets REALLY cold.
I stopped into J.Crew, Reformation, and a few of my favorite department stores to try on coats but left feeling pretty defeated - everything seemed to be too thin & too short (or otherwise not that cute).
When I received an invite in the mail to stop by an event at the recently renovated Paul Smith in Williamsburg (which is gorgeous, by the way), I popped by with a couple of guys who were thrilled to enjoy free craft brews while browsing. I unexpectedly found the coat of my dreams: it's wool lined (even in the pockets... so warm!), water resistant, and has the coolest, coolest oversized fit. Of course, I then had to tote it around in a massive bag to grab drinks at Caracas, the Whiskey Brooklyn, and Berry Park until 2 am, but hey it was a chance I couldn't pass up.
On that note, if you're in Brooklyn with an hour or two to spare, head into Berry Park. The rooftop bar views are incredible - it looks out over East Village & Midtown Manhattan. Extra points since the bartenders took pickleback shots with us.
Anyway, I'm so, so glad to be wearing this trench nearly every day now. Besides having weak winter wardrobe game (say that five times fast), my closet size here leaves something to be desired. So, I've been trying to shop with the one-third rule in mind: buy 1/3 of the things you would normally buy, but be willing to spend up to three times the price on it (not that you have to spend that much, being thrifty is a priority of mine, too). This coat was a bit of an investment, but the quality is unparalleled, and I know I'll have it in my closet for YEARS.
